Why Sandal Wood?

THE INCREASING VALUE OF SANDALWOOD
Sandalwood is extremely valuable and often referred to as the “green gold” since it’s the highest priced wood in the entire world. This may be surprising to some, but the value of sandalwood has been no secret, it’s been widely known for centuries and the demand for sandalwood continues to soar.

Knowing this, you may start looking at sandalwood a little differently.

The scientific name for sandalwood is “santalum” and it comes from the same family as European mistletoe. The sandalwood tree is primarily grown in Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Hawaii and other islands in the Pacific. What makes sandalwood so special is its ability to retain it’s aromatic scent for decades. The wood and its oil both emit a distinctively pleasant scent, which is widely used in perfumes and toiletry products. White sandalwood, the species called “santalum album” is the one most in demand in the marketplace.

FUTURE PROSPECTS
The prediction is that the demand for sandalwood will continue to grow year after year as future discoveries are bound to increase its applications in the fields of fragrance and pharmaceuticals. Certain international institutions are making major investments, a trend we predict will continue in the years to come.

HISTORY
Many centuries ago in ancient civilizations, sandalwood was often used in spiritual rituals. Emperors and the noble classes saw sandalwood as symbolizing status and power, which led to people calling it the “royal tree.” Sandalwood was often used in religious rituals, especially those involving Indian Buddhism. It was commonly believed to be sacred, a substance that formed a bridge between humans and the divine. Therefore, sandalwood was also identified as a “sacred tree.”

During the 16th Century, Hawaii received much of the world’s attention due to the abundant proliferation of the highly valued sandalwood tree. Hawaii was even referred to as the Sandalwood Mountains by the Chinese (Than Heung Sahn). During the 20th Century, India became a major grower and exporter of sandalwood, with an annual output approximating 4,000 tons. Unfortunately, uncontrolled felling along with environmental deterioration wiped out so many sandalwood trees that the Indian Government had to step in and demand that the tree’s felling and export be stopped.

Entering the 21st Century, sandalwood once again is at the center of another breakthrough, one for medicinal purposes. Years of scientific research has shown that sandalwood oil can act as both an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory substance, making it effective in combatting certain organisms that cause disease and various medical conditions.

Sandalwood trees are slow growing, usually taking several decades to reach maturity. This has a lot to do with the host plant, terrain, soil, climate and care. In order to promote ideal growing condition for sandalwood plants, one must pay close attention to the following:

– Climate/temperature

– Efficient water supply and irrigation

– Excellent plantation management

– Host plant and proper seed selection is key

– Plenty of sunshine

– Proper wind conditions

– Suitable site with the right terrain and soil conditions

***ESTIMATED value of 1 sandal wood tree is value about 1 million when fully grown.
